GENERAL PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY
Pediatric Neurology
is a special branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and management of neurological conditions from newborns to adolescents. Also called Child Neurology, it deals with diseases and disorders involving the brain, spinal cord, nervous systems, and muscles within the age range.
NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER
Neurodevelopmental disorders are impairments in the growth and development of the brain and/or central nervous system. This sometimes refers to a disorder of brain function that affects emotion, learning ability, self-control and memory.
ADD/ADHD
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common behavioral disorder. Those with ADHD usually act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. Most children show signs from time to time. The difference with those that have ADHD, is the fact that it will be much more prevalent. It's important to note, that until a proper evaluation is completed, you can only assume that your child might have ADHD.
AUTISM
Autism is a mental condition that is present from early childhood. It is characterized by a difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people. It's also characterized by a difficulty in using language and abstract concepts.
EPILEPSY / SEIZURE DISORDERS
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions. It is also associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
HEADACHES/MIGRAINES
Migraines are a severe and painful headache usually preceded by or accompanied by a sensory warning such as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and/or an increased sensitivity to light and sound. At times, the pain that migraines cause can last for hours or days.
CEREBRAL PALSY/SPASTICITY
Cerebral Palsy is a condition of impaired muscle coordination, called spastic paralysis, and/or other disabilities typically caused by damage to the brain. Spasticity is caused by altered skeletal muscle performance with a combination of paralysis, increased tendon reflex, and hypertonia. This usually results in "tight" or stiff muscles and an inability to control them, with a range of involuntary muscle spasms.
INTRATHECAL BACLOFEN THERAPY
Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy (ITB) is delivering a liquid form of baclofen directly into the spinal fluid. This is done using a device called a baclofen pump. This is used in treatment of severe spasticity.
